My e-Portfolio

1) How would the nursing profession benefit from information technology?

They can benefit in ways such as:

  • Increased Patient Safety: Health information systems can not only store and display but synthesize patient information. This makes it possible to, for example, program security checks that could alert medical personnel of adverse effects the patient might experience on a certain medication before it is prescribed. Being able to store all of a patient’s information, including lab results, medical imaging, and more in one place can also help avoid costly mistakes that arise when not all relevant information is available during decision-making.
  • Efficient Care Coordination: Information technology systems allow multiple medical professionals simultaneously involved in a patient’s care to record, disseminate, and share updates, logs, and findings. The nonprofit health system Catholic Health Initiatives, operator of more than ninety hospitals across multiple states, utilizes a robust information system that allows its staff to document and share every facet of a patient’s treatment and data. This cross-disciplinary information sharing has drastically improved patient satisfaction as well as helping coordinate care and case management to create a more seamless experience for caretaker and patient alike.
  • Enhanced Performance Analysis: Utilizing technology could allow a host of avenues by which staff performance, patient care and stability, and institution efficiency could be tracked. Health information technology could compute staffing decisions based on individual skillsets. It could also allow treatment decisions to be made proactively based on past performance data. Patients could submit anonymous feedback regarding their level of care, providing administrators with better feedback on staff qualifications and fit. And governing bodies could utilize performance metrics to more accurately analyze institution effectiveness.

Some of the challenges that still remain are:

  • standard structures for representing biomedical knowledge, protocols, and patient data
  • techniques for modeling diversity
  • digital certification and rights technology
  • decision-support tools that reduce the caregiver's workload
  • certification of products for compliance with standards
  • incentives

How will you contribute to their solution?

As a nurse leader I would give them a payer system with incentives for installing the informatics infrastructure and for people to use it.

2) What have I learned in this course and how has it impacted my future?

In this course I learned various things about Nursing Informatics, different parts of a computer, operating systems, (emr) and (ehr) etc. But the ones in which I felt were the most informative was Nursing Informatics, which is the speciality that integrates nursing science with multiple information management and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage and communicate data, infomation, knowledge and wisdom in nursing practice, as well as the benefits it provides such as improved data collection, improved records, promotes improvement in key relationships with: physicians, families, patients etc. I also realized how much of an advantage it gives in providing high-quality care to patients by providing a mechanism for them to provide their clinician(s) with critical information, and to share information with family, friends, and other patients. It can also enable them to exert greater control over their own care. Next I learned about Electronic Medical Record (emr) and Electronic Health Record (ehr) which are slightly different in the sense that the (emr) represents a medical record within a single facility, such as a doctor's office or a clinic and the (ehr) is an official health record for an individual that is shared among multiple facilities and agencies. My favourite was Telemedicine and Telehealth services which is the process of providing health care from a distance through technology, often using videoconferencing. It's benefits are: Health care cost savings, more conveint and accessible patient care and better patient care quality. I find this to be one of the smartest things to ever be created and very useful. This course has impacted my future by providing me with the basic knowledge of computers as well as nursing related topics which would help me in my career ahead.
